Therapy for High-Achieving Teens

Support for ambitious teens who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or burned out.

Not every teen who’s struggling looks like they’re struggling.

Many high-achieving adolescents maintain straight A’s, play competitive sports, lead clubs, and load up on AP classes. On the outside, they’re excelling. On the inside, they’re anxious, exhausted, and wondering how long they can keep up the pace.

I work with high-achieving teens throughout Washington State—both in-person at my Poulsbo office and online—who are:

  • Enrolled in rigorous academic programs or college-prep schools

  • Managing high expectations from themselves, teachers, or parents

  • Battling test anxiety or the pressure of college applications

  • Balancing academics, athletics, and extracurriculars

  • Perfectionistic, driven, and often feeling like it’s never enough

High standards can be a strength—but without the right support, they can also come at a cost. Many teens experience:

  • Constant anxiety and racing thoughts

  • Burnout that hides behind productivity

  • Depression masked by outward success

  • Overthinking, poor sleep, or physical symptoms of stress

  • A sense that their worth is tied entirely to performance

How Therapy Helps

Working with a therapist gives high-achieving teens a space to step back, breathe, and talk honestly—without fear of judgment or pressure to be perfect.

In therapy, I focus on helping teens:

  • Manage anxiety, stress, and overwhelm

  • Recognize and prevent burnout

  • Build tools for test anxiety and academic pressure

  • Set boundaries between ambition and well-being

  • Challenge all-or-nothing thinking and perfectionism

  • Strengthen identity and self-worth outside of achievements

  • Improve communication with parents, teachers, and peers

  • Prepare for big transitions like college or leaving home

For Parents

If your teen seems withdrawn, anxious, irritable, or is constantly pushing themselves without rest, therapy can offer meaningful support. I help teens protect their mental health without sacrificing their goals—and help families navigate the pressure that often comes with high expectations.

And because I offer online therapy, I can continue working with your teen even after they leave for college. That continuity can make a big difference during one of the most stressful and important transitions of their life.

About Robyn

I’ve been a therapist for over 20 years, and working with teens has always been one of the most meaningful parts of my work.

High-achieving teens are often incredibly bright, sensitive, and driven. They’re also under immense pressure—whether it’s from elite private school environments, competitive college prep tracks, or well-meaning parents who want the best for them. Many of these teens are trying to manage a constant internal voice that says, Be better. Do more. Don’t let anyone down.

I understand the intense expectations that come with high-achieving households—where success is the standard, burnout is invisible, and self-worth gets tangled up in performance. These teens are often carrying the weight of it all silently. From the outside, everything looks fine. On the inside, they’re anxious, exhausted, and wondering how much longer they can keep it together.

I’ve worked with students from rigorous academic programs, private high schools, and high-pressure extracurriculars. They don’t need someone to push them harder—they need someone who gets it. Someone who can be a calm, grounded presence and help them untangle their anxiety, perfectionism, and self-criticism without adding to the pressure.

I show up as myself—warm, nonjudgmental, and honest. Teens feel safe with me because I’m not here to evaluate them, and I’m not shocked by whatever they’re carrying. I offer a space where they don’t have to perform, and where they can start to reconnect with who they are outside of their achievements.

Many of the teens I’ve worked with have stayed connected with me through high school, college, and beyond. Being a trusted adult in their life is something I never take lightly—and something I consider a true honor.
